Busy busy and mapping the past...

What a week! Two visits to the PROV and a trip down to Geelong for a presentation. The final week of our land records sale kept me very busy at the PROV and I received plenty of requests that will keep me up to my neck in land files until mid next week!

Tuesday saw me heading down to Geelong in some not so favourable (but typical Melbourne!)weather to talk to a group of family researchers / genealogists at the South Barwon Community Centre. I spent a couple of hours running through the variety of records held at the PROV and explaining how they can be used to breath some life into your family history research. I had examples of the digitised records I’ve gathered over the past few months to really showcase just how wonderful these records are and what our ‘finished product’ looks like.

I also ran through how to go about identifying a modern day address for land referred to only by allotment and section number from a newspaper / will / probate etc. The combination of an old parish map and Google Maps can produce some wonderful results. In the coming weeks I’ll be developing some tip sheets for identifying old land on a new map and how using the Google Maps ‘my maps’ feature can help you display and share information about your ancestors land.

To see a map I’ve created of my ancestors land in the North East of Victoria, click here. All information on the map has been found in various records held at the PROV.

Cheers - Mark
