Licensed Houses - the mini asylums...

Posted by Mark @ Archival Access Victoria on June 17, 2012 at 2:05 AM

Another set of records I have set to work on are those relating to Licensed Houses. These establishments were defined as an “institution which held a licence granted by the Chief Secretary to house one or more insane persons”. They were, in most cases, private residences converted for use as a mental home. Interesting tingly, the patients at these houses are not included in the digitised indexes available for the various Victorian asylums, but the patient registers for some licensed houses do exist, and are available at PROV. I’ll be viewing some of the Licensed House records in the coming weeks with a view to indexing them.

Stay tuned.
